City areas
With a mix of old establishments and new buildings, Saint-Étienne is divided into 21 picturesque neighborhoods (quartiers), each with its own attractions and role in the city’s well-being.
- Quartier 1: Montreynaud and Bergson la Terrasse – situated in the north part of the city.
Features: Modern Art Museum, Eglise Sacré-Coeur
- Quartier 2: Côte Chaude Montaud – in the north-west of the city
Features: Golf de Saint-Étienne, Parc de Montaud
- Quartier 3: Carnot le Marais – in the north-east of the city centre
Features: Le Fil (concert hall), La Cité du Design, Campus de Carnot
- Quartier 4: Méons le Soleil – east of the city centre
Features: Parc des sports de Méons, Terril de l’Eparre, Eglise Sainte-Barbe
- Quartier 5: Châteaucreux and Crêt de Roc – close to the city centre
Features: Châteaucreux is a transport hub and future business centre of the city. The most notable buildings here are the historical and social headquarters of the Casino group, as well as the parcotrain, a large parking spot. Crêt de Roc is mostly a residential area, filled with passages through the old buildings.
- Quartier 6: Jacquard – rather central district
Features: Place Jacquard, the synagogue
- Quartier 7: Old city center
Features: Among many old buildings, there are the Hôtel de Ville, the Saint-Charles cathedral, Sainte-Marie church, Place Jean-Jaurès, Place du Peuple and Palais de justice.
- Quartier 8: Saint Jacques Chavanelle
Features: Place Chavanelle, Notre-Dame church
- Quartier 9: Colline des Pères, Tardy
Features: Fine Arts School, Art and Industry Museum. However, the most interesting feature of this district is its 25 m high cross.
- Quartier 10: Tarentaize Beaubrun Severine – in the west part of the city
Features: Musée de la mine, Parc Couriot, Église Saint-Ennemond.
- Quartier 11: Cotonne
- Quartier 12: Bizillon Centre Deux – south of the city centre
Features: Centre-Deux (commercial centre), Liberty statue, Chalet Bizillon, Campus de Tréfilerie.
- Quartier 13: Badouillère Saint-Roch Valbenoîte
Features: Massenet Conservatory, Saint-Roch church, Valbenoite church.
- Quartier 14: Monthieu, Saint-François – east of the city centre
Features: Opéra-théâtre de Saint-Étienne, Jardin des Plantes, Parc Giron
- Quartiers 15 – 16: Beaulieu Montchovet Marandinière and Fauriel – south of the city centre
Features: L’Astronef (planetarium), La Rotonde (scientific, industrial and technical centre)
- Quartier 17: La Métare La Palle Le Portail Rouge
Features: Parc de l’Europe
- Quartier 18: Le Bernay Valfuret La Rivière
- Quartier 19: Bellevue Solaure
Features: Gare de Bellevue, Clinique Mutualiste, Parc de Bellevue
- Quartier 20: Terrenoire – east part of the city
Features: Place du Pilat, Parc du Château de la Perrotière, Bois d’Avaize hill
